LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday approved nomination papers of Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of former premier Nawaz Sharif, as she prepares to contest NA-120 by-election after her husband was disqualified by Supreme Court in Panama case.
ECP rejected the reservations raised by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT). She will now contest the NA-120 by-poll which is scheduled in September.
The relevant Returning Officer said two petitioners made nine objections against Kulsoom Nawaz and all of them were rejected after thoroughly listening to arguments.
Kulsoom Nawaz was to appear before ECP at 3 pm today but she had to leave for London in order to take medical checkup. PAT and PTI candidates had challenged the nomination papers saying the name of a disqualified person’s party cannot be used in the election and her UAE Iqama (work permit) was not affixed with documents.
Top rival contender of Kulsoom in the NA-120 by-election, Pakisan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid had challenged the nomination of PML-N’s candidate. Dr Yasmin had objected that details of assets of Kulsoom’s spouse mentioned in the nomination papers did not match to what the Joint Investigation Team of the Panama Leaks case had discovered.
“Nawaz’s documents of assets and Iqama attached with the nomination papers have been declared forged by the Supreme Court,” she said. The petitioner said the nomination papers did not include details of income from Capital-FZE company, tax returns, furniture in Marri residency and other valuables.
She objected that on Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s directive development work in the constituency were still in progress which was tantamount to pre-poll rigging. She had urged the RO for rejection of Kulsoom’s nomination papers.
The candidates of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) had also filed objections against PML-N’s candidate Ms Kulsoom over concealing her salary after disclosing her foreign work-permit in the nomination papers besides diatribe against military and treason charges.
“There is no case of corruption against Nawaz Sharif and these are same allegations Imran Khan has been imposing on our party,” Asif Kirmani said while media talk. He mentioned that returning officer gave full opportunity to their political rivals, but they had no evidence whatsoever.
Kirmani further stated that nine objections were raised against ex-PM’s wife and not a single could be proved. “When RO asked whether we also have any reservation against the candidates, we said no and declared to contest with them in the election, on the basis of votes,” he stressed.
He compared these objections to Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan’s allegations on Nawaz and said Imran had also no evidence against the former PM as he was only presenting news printed in press.
The by-poll on NA-120 seat would be held on September 17. It was left vacant after Nawaz Sharif was declared unqualified by the apex court in Panama Leaks case on July 28. Let it be known that Opposition Leader Khurshid Shah had opined that PML-N can win NA-120 by-poll if they choose Kulsoom Nawaz as their candidate.
Meanwhile, the PML-N candidate Kulsoom Nawaz has left for London and is expected to return after the election. Kulsoom Nawaz flew to London for medical checkup, according to family sources.
Meanwhile, nomination papers of PTI candidate Yasmin Rashid were accepted by the ECP as she appeared before the commission. Her candidature was accepted when PPP candidate Faisal Mir withdrew his objections today is the last day for scrutiny of nomination papers.
