NAB in action against bigwigs over corruption

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau, in its Executive Board meeting, presided by NAB Chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal, has formally approved references, investigations, and enquiries into alleged corruption by several officials on Tuesday.

The bureau will file corruption references against former chairman of Pakistan Railways Lt Gen (r) Javed Ashraf Qazi, former Railways sectary Major Gen (r) Hamid Hassan Butt, former PR general manager Iqbal Samad Khan, ex-GM (operations) Khurshid Ahmad Khan, ex-member finance Brig (r) Akhtar Ali Baig, former director Abdul Ghafar, former superintendent Muhammad Ramzan Sheikh, former Telecommunications minister Lt Gen (r) Saeed-ul-Zafar, Ms Husnain Construction Company director Muhammad Ramzan, Unicon Consulting Services chief executive Pervaiz Latif Qureshi, and others for bringing a loss of more than Rs2 billion to national exchequer by misusing their authority.

Also, the corruption references will be filed against former Wapda chairman Tariq Hameed, former member (Power) Muhammad Anwar Khalid, Muhammad Mushtaq, former Finance m Imtiaz Anjum and others.

They are found to have misused their authority, in violation of Nepra, Pepra and ECC rules, by awarding a 150MW rental power contract to Ms General Electric Energy Pvt Ltd which resulted in a loss of billions to public money.

The Nab will also verify a complaint against Pakistan Dental Council president, who in connivance with State Minister Health Services Saira Afzal Tarar, for misappropriation in the affiliation of 12 medical colleges.

The bureau’s executive board also approved investigations against former CDA chairman Farkhand Iqbal, former member (state) Khalid Mahmood Mirza, former member (finance) Javed Jahangir and others for bringing a loss of Rs494.333 million to the national exchequer.

Moreover, the anti-corruption watchdog approved investigations against former Sindh minister Abdul Rauf Sadiqque, Muhammad Adil Sadiqque, Dr Sarwat Faheem, Mushtaq Faheem, Mushtaq Ali and others for misuse of authority and a loss of Rs435.4 million to the state funds.

The bureau approved enquiry against former PDA director generals Sahabzada Saeed Ahmad, Syed Zahir Shah and Muhammad Tariq, former general manager Abdul Haleem Paracha and others over misuse of authority and causing a loss of Rs75.27 million to the national exchequer.

The bureau approved enquiry against Peshawar’s ex-MPA Tamash Khan and Balochistan health minister Rehmat Baloch over assets beyond means.

Meanwhile, the Board decided to send back the enquiry against the administration of Pasco and others to department concern for further legal action.

On the other hand, the top anti-corruption body decided to close enquiries against former Distance Learning director at Bahauddin Zakariya University, Dr Ishaq Fani, and the officers of Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and National Highway Authority over lack of evidence.

Chairing the meeting, the Nab chairman said the elimination of corruption is their priority and directed the bureau to bring all the investigations and enquiries to a logical end.
