Police arrest 15th accused in Ambreen murder case

ABBOTTABAD: Police claimed to have arrested the 15th accused person in the murder of Ambreen Riasat, a young girl from Dunga Gali area of Abbottabad. Ambreen Riasat, who was burnt to death for allegedly helping a couple elope in 2016.

As per details, the accused Wajid was one of the members of the Jirga that had decided to burn Ambreen to death in 2016. However, 14 members had been arrested within days of the event. A 15-member jirga called by the Makool village councillor had ordered for the deceased, Ambreen, to be set on fire. The body of the teenage girl was found in a burnt Suzuki van in Donga Gali on April 29, 2016.

The body was tied to the seat of the vehicle, which was parked at a bus stop in the village. Another vehicle parked near the van was also damaged. The girl, who was later identified as the daughter of Riasat, a labourer who worked in Balochistan’s Gadani area.

Police officials including DSP Mr. Jamil ur Rehman, DSP Investigation Yasin Janjua and SHO Dunga Gali Nadir Jadoon while talking to journalists told that on April 29, 2016 about 02:20 A.m. a gir later identified as Ambreen Riasat was burnt to death for allegedly helping a couple elope in April 2016.

They said the jirga ordered the murder to punish Ambreen for supporting the alleged affair of her friend with a boy. They further told that case against 14 other accused is under hearing in Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) Hazara. As per source, a couple of months earlier, Ambreen’s friend Saima was killed for allegedly being in love with a boy.
