KABUL: Former jihadi leader and head of Adalat Party, Prof. Abdul Rab Rasool Sayaf has urged Saudi officials and ulema to help in restoring peace to Afghanistan.

Sayyaf is currently visiting Saudi Arabia and held talks with different Saudi religious scholars and officials, sources in Saudi Arabia told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).

Prof. Sayaf met several Saudi clerics and representatives of different ministries and asked them to help Afghan peace and reconciliation process.

Afghan ambassador to Saudi Arabia Said Karim who also attended the meeting said Saudi officials’ cooperation through different ways could prove effective in the Afghan peace.

Masud Trashwal, spokesman of Herasat and Sabat Shura, told AIP that they hoped Sayyaf’s visit would open a new way to peace.

He said Sayyaf was visiting Saudi Arabia on the invitation of Saudi officials and scheduled to holding meeting with some other Saudi officials.

There are reports that he would also visit United Arab Emirates after performing Umrah.

Sayyaf was considered to be closed to Saurdi officials than other Afghan jihadi leaders during Jihad against former Soviet Union. He has the ability to convince Arab leaders and clerics on supporting Afghans.

It is his first trip to Saudi Arabia after nearly two decades. Sayyaf visits the Kingdom at a time when the peace talks between Taliban and Afghan government have come to standstill situation following the deadly bomb attack in Kabul’s Sadarat Square, forcing the Afghan government to stop peace talks efforts with Taliban and adopt other ways to achieve the goal of peace in the country.
