10 killed in anti-regime protests across Iran

TEHRAN: At least 10 people were killed in protests across Iran, state officials said Monday.

Lawmaker Hedayatollah Khademi said two more people were killed in southwestern Izeh town in Khuzestan province on Sunday night, according to Iranian Labour News Agency, rising the death toll to 10.

Also 377 arrests were made — 200 from the capital Tehran — during the protests.

The other arrests were reported in Arak, Isfahan and Robat Karim cities and West Azerbaijan province.

Thousands of Iranians on Thursday hit the streets in the northeastern cities of Mashhad and Kashmar to protest rising commodity prices and perceived government mismanagement, accor-ding to local media reports.

Thursday’s protests were followed by pro-government protests on Saturday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday warned Iranians against the ongoing anti-government protests across the country.

“We should avoid putting the country in a situation the enemies can take advantage of,” Rouhani said, following a cabinet meeting.

Also on Monday, Iran acc-used Canada of “interfering in Tehran’s internal affairs” through its stance on anti-go-vernment protests in the cou-ntry. Foreign Ministry spok-esman Bahram Qasemi said that the Canadian government’s “meddlesome” stance over the protests was a “violation of international commitments”.

Tehran also described the recent statements made by the U.S. as “a support to anti-regime opponents”.

The U.S and Canada in separate statements expressed concern over the ongoing demonstrations in Iran.

“Canada is encouraged by the Iranian people who are exercising their basic right to protest peacefully,” the Global Affairs Canada, a department in the government of Canada that manages diplomatic and consular relations, said in a statement.

U.S. President Trump said in a Twitter post: “Big prote-sts in Iran.

The people are finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism. Looks like they will not take it any longer.”

Iranian President Rouhani warned Iranians against the ongoing anti-government protests across the country.
