1,000 Afghans to be resettled in Yorkshire

KABUL (Pajhwok): Nearly 1,000 Afghan refugees will be resettled in Yorkshire under two British government schemes, says a media report. The refugees would be taken in through the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) and the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS).
The Irish Post reported about 7,000 Afghans were being resettled in the UK under the ARAP, which covers the Afghans who worked with the British military. Launched this week, the ACRS allows people who are deemed to be at risk of persecution in their home country, such as democracy campaigners, women’s rights activists and members of minority groups, to stay in the UK indefinitely.
Councils in the country, where 300 refugees have already been resettled, have agreed to accept another 1,000 Afghans through both schemes. David Brown, Yorkshire head of migration, said the people relocated under the ARAP had been given priority for housing.
The ACRS will provide up to 20,000 Afghans with a safe and legal route to resettle in the UK, according to the Home Office.
