20 kg explosive defused in Shabqadar

CHARSADDA: Police defused an improvised explosive device weighing around 20 kilograms in Khwajawas on Monday in barren marble factory. Concealed in the marble blocks, the explosive along with 50 safety fuses have been placed near in Khwajawas area, police said.
They added that it was spotted by police and Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) personnel who noticed a few wires connected with the cement block in the morning. Subsequently, the BDU of police was called and the area was cordoned off. An official of the Police said that the total weight of the explosive was around 20 kg.
“The explosive was laced with ball bearings, nuts, bolts, 1600 explosive rods and 50 safety rods,” PRO claimed. The explosives were arranged in a way that they would have gone in one direction in case of explosion, he said. The explosive was attached to a detonator, batteries and with a remote-controlled device.
An official explained that multiple batteries were meant to keep the IED active for a long period of time. Commenting on a possible target of the explosive, DPO IrfanUllah said: “While the marble factories’ labors often work near the place where the explosive was planted, nothing can be said for sure. The motive could also be causing fear and chaos in the area,” he said.
