‘375 Taliban, 72 IS commanders perish

KABUL: Defense ministry spokesman Daulat Waziri has said the Afghan ground and air forces killed thousands of armed opponents, including 447 commanders during operations in the country over the past one year.

Talking to reporters in Kabul on Monday, Waziri said the Afghan National Army (ANA) conducted 926 planned operations, 3,663 commando offensives and 209 night time raids in 1,396 Afghan year.

The Afghan Air Force carried out 62 aerial flights to support the ANA troops, he said. They conducted 4,631 airstrikes against the enemy in the same period of time, he added. Thousands of armed opponents were killed, about 11,000 more injured and 2,068 others arrested alive in the past one year, he said. The fallen gunmen included 2,250 Islamic State or Daesh gunmen, he noted. Similarly, he added that the dead gunmen included 375 Taliban and 72 Daesh commanders.

He went on to say that 781 vehicles, 1,411 motorcycles, 14,818 kilograms of explosives, thousands of weapons and 179 wireless communication devices were seized in the same period of time. The security forces found and defused 13,642 improvised explosive devices, he added.

The donor countries provided over 1,000 various kinds of vehicles to the Afghan forces in the past one year, he said. Similarly, he added that the United States of America provided eight blackhock helicopters to the Afghan troops, he maintained.

He said 2,059 persons were provided training in Afghanistan and out of the country in the past year. Later, they were inducted in the Afghan National Army (ANA), he maintained.

Currently, he added that 807 persons were getting military training in various countries. He said the defence ministry investigated 164 cases of corruption about the ANA troops in the past one year. Of them 37 cases were referred to justice and judicial entities.

Waziri, however, did not say anything about casualties to Afghan forces. The armed opponents have not said anything in this regard till the filling of this report.
