50 killed in deadly gunfight among Taliban factions in Herat

HEART: At least 50 people were killed and dozen others were injured when gunfight erupts among the Taliban factions in Shindand district of Heart province on Sunday night.

Spokesman of Heart Governor, Jilani Farhad told media that the gunfight was started between Mullah Hibatullah and Mullah Muhammad Rasool and their supporters started firing on each other.
He added that Mullah Samad and Mullah Nangyal exchanged fire in the area, as Mullah Samad is supporting Maulvi Hibatullah while Mullah Nangial fights in support of Maulvi Muhammad Rasool.

Farhad confirmed that 32 fighters of Mullah Samad group were killed and six more injured in the gunfight and adding that eight gunmen of Mullah Nangial group were killed and four others were injured in the clash.

Both the Taliban groups have not said anything in this regard so far.

After the announcement of the death of Taliban movement founder Mullah Muhammad Omar, Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansoor was appointed as the new head of Taliban but his appointment create rifts among the Taliban ranks and several Taliban leaders’ part ways with Taliban central leadership and formed a new faction in Taliban headed by Mullah Akhtar Rasool named as High Council of Afghanistan’s Islamic Emirate.

Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansoor was killed in a US drone strike in Balochistan province of Pakistan last year. After his death, Maulvi Hibatullah Akhundzada was appointed as the new chief of Taliban movement.
