74 years since UN’s forgotten Kashmir resolution of 1949

Monitoring Desk

ISLAMABAD: Every year 5th January is observed as the Right to Self-Determination Day of Occupied Kashmir as the United Nations had passed a resolution guaranteeing a free and fair referendum in Occupied Kashmir on 5th January, 1949.

The day is being observed to remind the global community that they cannot ignore their responsibility towards Sub-continent’s unfinished agenda—Kashmir dispute resolution.

The United Nations (UN) owes it to Pakistan, and the people of Kashmir to honor its commitments made 74 years ago.

A collective punishment is being given to the people of Occupied Kashmir by the Indian occupying forces

The Indian Army has turned the occupied valley into the largest military zone in the world and being committed atrocities.

Indian forces have introduced various laws such as the Disturbed Areas Act, the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the Public Safety Act to arrest anyone indefinitely and kill them without due process.

People in Occupied Kashmir have been deprived of their basic rights including life, property, health, freedom of expression, and right of assembly.

August 5, 2019

Since August 5, 2019, through continuous illegal and unilateral actions, Modi’s government has created an atmosphere of fear and chaos in Occupied Kashmir.

The right to self-determination is a fundamental right under the Charter of the United Nations, the denial of which is a violation of this Universal Declaration and its treaties. The international community has a legal and moral obligation to fulfill its promises to the Kashmiri people

Indian actions have been widely rejected by the international community, the United Nations, and international human rights organizations. Indian illegal actions of August 5, 2019, and the recent decision of the Supreme Court of India are an attempt to colonize this disputed territory in violation of UN and international laws.

Pakistan will continue to provide moral, political, and diplomatic support to the people of Occupied Kashmir until they achieve their right to self-determination by the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

The United Nations has recently passed a Pakistan-sponsored resolution on the universal realization of the right of peoples to self-determination, which has been supported by a large number of countries.

The United Nations must ensure the fulfillment of its promises to the Kashmiri people and to give the Kashmiri people an opportunity to determine their future through a free and fair referendum.
