8 dead as Taliban attack political party’s office

SHABARGHAN: At least five people were killed and three others wounded as Taliban attacked the the office of Hezb-e-Azadi Afghanistan in the Sherin Tagab district of Faryab province yesterday, the party said Saturday.

The gunmen attacked the office of General Abdul Malik led Hezb-e-Azadi in the Faizabad area of Sherin Tagab district at approximately 9:00 p.m. (local time) yesterday, the   Hezb-e-Azadi said in a statement. It said the fighting still continued, leaving five people dead and three more wounded. The slain people were identified as Niamatullah, Lala Muhammad, Din Muhammad, Muhammad Farooq and Muhammad Ishaq, adding all the five were serving as guards of the office. Security chief of Faryab police Muhammad Naeem Andrabi, however, told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) that three police were killed and as many wounded after gunmen attacked the office of Hezb-e-Azadi Afghanistan in the Sherin Tagab district.

General Malik is the advisor of Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah. Taliban Spokesman Qari Muhammad Yousaf Ahmadi claimed the attack, saying the attack targeted pro-government local militia. He said Commander Niamatullah among five gunmen were killed and three more wounded in the attack.

Meanwhile, commander of local police Habibullah who had been seized by Daesh gunmen in Sar e Pul city two months ago was freed on the mediation of local elders today, said Khalilullah Dastyar, police chief of Sar-e-Pul province. Local residents, however, said Commander Habib was freed in exchange for money.
