Action against drug peddlers
Taking cognizance of spreading drug addiction among both genders of youth, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on Wednesday ordered crackdown against drug peddlers. Draft legislation for the effective control of this menace shall be tabled in the provincial legislature soon. Detoxification centers shall be established in the rehabilitation units which are already functional at different districts across the province. Besides this the distribution of toxic chemicals which are used in the preparation of certain sedative medicines by pharmaceutical firms shall be regulated.
It is no longer a secrete that influential drug barons, who have connections in the rank and files of almost all political parties, are supplying the narcotics including heroin and crystal meth, commonly known as ice to the school, college and university going youth through their carries and peddlers. They are bent upon destroying the current generation which is the future hope of the nation. Focusing crackdown on drug peddlers alone amount to sparingly trimming of branches of a poison producing big tree. The legal and punitive action need to be directed more against the influential drug lords who may apparently look like gentlemen.
A news item in Urdu daily states that state institutions, which have the authority of narcotics control, have started discrete scrutiny against some politicians. If the news report is correct then it is a welcome step towards rooting out the scourge of narcotics. But the question still remains, “who will bell the cat.”If the current and future generations are to be protected from drug addiction then across-the-board strict and sustained action has to be taken against drug barons and peddlers.
