Admission policy for medical colleges
Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has amended Admission, House Job and Internship Regulation 2018. The amendment will enforce an open merit policy on national basis for admission in the Medical and Dental Colleges across the country. Private medical and dental institutions in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa have shown resentment over the new admission policy as it will open the flood gates of entry of 1300 students from the province of Punjab alone, depriving the talented ones of the home province. The matter has been brought to the notice of the Governor and Chief Minister to take it up with the federal government.
This sort of admission policy was not even in vogue in the era of “One Unit” of former West Pakistan. On the face of it seems in conflict with the principle of provincial autonomy which is enshrined in the constitution of Pakistan. The MTI Act has created disillusionment about the future prospects of career among the young doctors and the new admission policy will kill the yearning for the pursuit of medical profession among the students.
