TALUQAN: Five militants have been confirmed dead as clash erupted in Eshkamish district of the northern Takhar province on Monday, local police official Abdul Rashid said.

The clash, according to the official, broke out after a group of the insurgents attacked local police checkpoints in Kata Qaroq area of the restive district early in the morning and police retaliated, forcing the militants to flee after leaving five bodies behind.

Three more insurgents were wounded in the firefight which lasted for a while, the official further said. The official said that three villagers, all civilians, sustained injuries in fire exchange.

Taliban militants haven’t commented. A similar fighting had also left four militants dead in the neighboring Kunduz province on the same day, according to provincial officials. (Xinhua)
