Afghan lawmakers elect first deputy speaker of Lower House

KABUL: The Afghan lawmakers in the Lower House of the Parliament, Wolesi Jirga, on Sunday elected the first deputy house speaker during a voting organized by the administrative delegation of the parliament.

Humayoun Humayoun managed to secure the most votes from the lawmakers during the voting process and was elected as the first deputy house speaker.

At least 116 lawmakers were present in Sunday’s general session of the parliament with Humayoung receiving 110 votes to win the first deputy house speaker seat.

Nazir Ahmadi and Humayoun were the two nominees for the first deputy house speaker seat. However, MP Ahmadi did not secure the required votes to win the seat.

The election process for the second deputy house speaker is expected to be organized during the Monday’s session of the Lower House of the Parliament.

The candidates for the second deputy speaker are Mohammad Abdu and Abdullah Kalimzai. The lawmakers will cast votes Monday.

This comes as the election process for the second deputy secretary of the Lower House was organized during Saturday’s session of the parliament.

Irfanullah managed to secure the most votes during the session of the parliament on Saturday to secure the seat of the second secretary.

In the meantime, the Afghan lawmakers are expected to cast votes for the seat of the first secretary of the Lower House on Monday.
