FARAH (BNA): Senior Afghanistan and Iranian officials met at the Sheikh Abu Nasr Farahi border crossing to tackle trade disruptions and stalled infrastructure projects, underscoring a push for stronger economic ties.
Joint effort to improve trade routes
The high-level meeting brought together Iranian Ambassador to Afghanistan Alireza Beigddeli, Herat Consul General Alireza Marhamati, South Khorasan Deputy Governor Jafari, and Farah Governor Mawlawi Ghousuddin Rahbar. Talks focused on expediting road repairs and easing trade flows. Rahbar announced a joint Afghan-Iranian committee to oversee reconstruction efforts at the key border crossing.
“Trade is the backbone of regional stability, and we are committed to ensuring smooth cross-border movement,” Rahbar said.
Infrastructure delays due to material shortages
Project Engr. Mohammad Mohammadi noted that while labor and machinery are ready, shortages of asphalt, fuel, and funding have stalled progress.
“We have the workforce and equipment, but without key materials, work remains slow,” he told officials.
Iranian officials reaffirmed their commitment to trade facilitation, with Jafari stressing Iran’s readiness to support infrastructure projects.
Expanding economic and cultural ties
Ambassador Beigddeli highlighted Afghanistan’s annual exports of over $50 million to Iran, saying there is room for growth.
“Beyond trade, we seek deeper cultural and educational partnerships for long-term cooperation,” he said.
The meeting concluded with both sides pledging to accelerate infrastructure development and expand economic collaboration, though officials acknowledged that funding constraints remain a key challenge.
