Quake death toll in Kunar crosses 1,400, with 3,124 injured

KABUL (Pajhwok): The death toll from the devastating earthquake in the provincial capital and five districts of eastern Kunar province, has climbed to 1,411 with 3,124 others injured, while 5,412 houses have been destroyed.

The midnight earthquake was recorded at magnitude 6.0 on the Richter Scale by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Zabihullah Mujahid, chief spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), wrote on X that as of now, the earthquake in Asadabad (the center of Kunar) and the districts of Nurgal, Chawkay, Chapa Dara, Pechdara, and Watapur has caused 1,411 deaths and 3,124 injuries.

He also said that 5,412 homes were destroyed in the affected areas.

This comes after the Afghan Red Crescent Society earlier reported that in the deadly earthquake in Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces, 1,124 people had died, 3,251 were injured, and more than 8,000 homes flattened.
