KABUL: Unconfirmed reports indicate that at least 16 civilians were killed in an airstrike in Sangin district in southern Helmand province. Sangin residents said the victims were all members of one family and that children and women were also among them.
Helmand Governor Yasin Khan confirmed the airstrike and said civilians were also affected in the raid but he did not give details about the number of casualties.
According to him, the airstrike was carried out in Sangin district on Thursday.
The Ministry of Defense in a statement on Friday said a large-scale military operation is underway in Sangin district for the past three days. The ministry said a team has been assigned to investigate possible civilian casualties in the incident.
