AJK president urges US to play role in Kashmir resolution

ISLAMABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry held a special meeting with Political Counselor of the US Embassy Zachary Herkenrider on Thursday.

Sultan Mahmood stressed that the United States should play its due role to help resolve the Kashmir dispute for peace and stability in South Asia.

During the meeting, the AJK president who briefed the US envoy-led delegation on the current situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir and highlighted the ongoing human rights violations.

He said that India had forcibly occupied the territory against the wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

He emphasized that peace in South Asia is linked to the just resolution of the Kashmir conflict.

Sultan Mahmood warned that any incident between Pakistan and India could escalate into a conflict, potentially even nuclear war.

He stressed that the ceasefire between the two nations must be made permanent to avoid such a threat.

The AJK president welcomed US President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate on the Kashmir issue and appreciated the role of US Senator Marco Rubio in supporting the Kashmiri cause.

He called on the United States to support the right to self-determination for the people of Kashmir through United Nations resolutions.
