ANA soldier among 6 killed

HERAT: An Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier killed his colleague while five persons lost their lives due to extreme cold in Herat province, officials said.

An ANA soldier opened fire on his colleagues at a checkpoint in Orej area in Chisht Sharif district of Herat province today, a security official, who wished anonymity, told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).

Resultantly, he said an ANA soldier was killed and another sustained injuries.

The attacker took away his weapons before fleeing the scene, he said, adding that he joined Taliban ranks.

Security officials and Taliban have not said anything in this regard so far.

Meanwhile, Herat zonal hospital emergency ward in-charge Dr. Arif Jalali told AIP that they had received five persons who had lost their lives due to extreme cold in the past 24 hours.

According to ambulance officials in Herat, they had taken 82 people to the zonal hospital since yesterday. They had been affected by extreme cold. (AIP)
