Apex Court adjourns hearing of substandard stents for 10 days

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Monday adjourned hearing of a suo moto notice case regarding sale of substandard stents in the country for ten days.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the case.

During the course of proceedings, Rawalpindi Executive Director of Institute of Cardiology submitted report of the committee constituted by the court on the issue.

The report said cost of placing a stent in the heart would reduce from three hundred thousand to one hundred thousand rupees.

Dr Azhar Kiyani told the court that stents can be placed in the heart at a cost of Rs 0.1 million.

Expressing satisfaction with the report, Justice Nisar lauded performance of the committee, saying the senior doctors have done invaluable service to the whole nation.

“The report is wonderful and a great news,” the chief justice said. He, however, mentioned that this price is still high for the common man.

Furthermore, Justice Ijazul Hasan praised Dr Kiyani and stated that he has saved many lives. The court ordered to send copies of the report to the drug regulatory authority of Pakistan and provincial governments for comments within ten days.

The chief justice remarked that reducing the cost to one hundred thousand rupees was a wonder. He remarked that the report was great news for him. However, he also pointed out that the nation could not afford this price.
