KARACHI: Having himself heavily relied on Sindh Government for his own security, Mayor of Karachi Waseem Akhter on Thursday made surprising offer to host the final of Pakistan Super League (PSL) in Karachi.
“I offer The PCB official to hold PSL2017 Final in Karachi, we will cooperate in every way, and if it happens it will be a Great Success,” Akhter said in Tweet following his speech at Pakistan Marine Academy Karachi’s sports Gala event. Speaking to the Gala event Waseem Akhter stressed for holding the sports gala like events in the seaside metropolis. “Such events don’t require huge funs but these leave great impact on the society,” Akhter said. The PSL final should be held in the country even if the international players refuse to play in Pakistan, Akhter suggested, offering that if the final was held in Karachi he will take the entire responsibility. The city’s mayor condemned acts of terrorism that have happened in the country over last couple of days. He lauded Pakistan navy for hosting maritime exercises.
“The navy exercises have given strong message to the enemies,” he said. It’s pertinent to mention that the PCB had promised to provide top-level security to the PSL finalists at Gaddafi Stadium. But a bomber targeting police negotiating with protesting pharmacists on Monday killed 13 people in Lahore, casting fresh doubt over whether foreign cricketers will risk a return to playing in Pakistan. Pakistanis were quick to voice fears that Monday's explosion in Lahore could derail plans to hold the highly anticipated final of the PSL there.
The PSL chairman has said that he wants to poll the Pakistan public and let them decide whether they want to see the final in Lahore most likely without foreign players or Dubai again probably with overseas players. "I want cricket lovers to tell me ... what do they want? Whatever they want, we will do," Sethi said.
