ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser on Wednesday directed the national food security minister to provide compensation to farmers after personally estimating their losses incurred upon them because of rains.

Asad Qaiser said this during a meeting with the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) in Islamabad. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sahibzada Muhammad Mehboob Sultan was also present on this occasion.

Sahibzada Muhammad Mehboob Sultan said he had contacted administrations of all four provinces. He said loss of wheat crop was witnessed in 13 districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the ministry would provide relief after estimating the losses.

Member National Assembly (MNA) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Riaz Fatyana said duty on import of cotton was reduced to zero from 5 percent.

“The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has been given permission to import cotton on zero duty,” he said.

President PKI Khalid Khokhar said Pakitani growers stopped farming cotton for not getting profit on it. “A support prize of cotton should be set for enhancement of economy,” he said.

On April 17, Asad Qaiser had said farmers in the country were facing countless challenges.

Chairing the meeting of Special Committee on Agricultural Products at the Parliament House, Asad Qaiser had asked the provinces to work for providing relief to farmers for their loss of crops because of rains.

He had said a mechanism should be made for resolution of losses of farmers.
