Canada retracting free security privileges from Prince Harry, Meghan Markle

Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are on their way to living a more normal life outside of the ‘confines’ of the royal family, it appears as though the Canadian government finds it to be an appropriate time to announce a cut-back on their support towards the couple’s safety and security.

This news comes after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced they were the ones who were providing security to the former royals and their son. However, that protection will cease in March.

The exact date for this retraction is not confirmed as of yet, however, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair believes the service will stop “in the coming weeks” and might coincide with their official adieu date from the British royal family that is set to occur on March 31st.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued an official statement in regards to the matter just recently, it read, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex choosing to re-locate to Canada on a part-time basis presented our government with a unique and unprecedented set of circumstances. The RCMP has been engaged with officials in the UK from the very beginning regarding security considerations.”

“As the Duke and Duchess are currently recognized as Internationally Protected Persons, Canada has an obligation to provide security assistance on an as-needed basis. At the request of the Metropolitan Police, the RCMP has been providing assistance to the Met since the arrival of the Duke and Duchess to Canada intermittently since November 2019. The assistance will cease in the coming weeks, in keeping with their change in status.”
