Bollywood’s biggest stars shine at India film awards

EAST RUTHERFORD (AFP): India’s biggest Bollywood stars lit up an American stadium Saturday with a dazzling celebration of dance, music and fashion at the International Indian Film Academy awards just outside New York.

Held each year in a different city overseas, IIFA is India’s biggest media event and one of the world’s most-watched annual entertainment shows, with an audience of nearly 800 million people.

Thousands of delighted fans, dressed to the nines in evening gowns, cocktail dresses, saris and jewel-encrusted shalwar kameez, shrieked with delight as the awards got underway at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, a short drive from New York.

A Donald Trump impersonator, introduced as Ronald Grump, tried to lead the crowd in a few strains of song, before actress Alia Bhatt whipped the audience into a frenzy, cheering an upbeat song and signature Bollywood moves with backup dancers in neon costumes.

Fellow A-listers Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Shahid Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon are also expected to perform.

Hosted by Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and producer-director Karan Johar, it is the culmination of a three-day festival, which kicked off with a fashion show and music in Times Square.

On Friday, the heavens opened during a concert honoring A.R. Rahman, the movie composer who won two Oscars in 2009 for “Slumdog Millionaire” and a green carpet parade of stars in their finery was canceled at the last minute owing to the poor weather.

This year marks the 18th edition of the awards, which some dub the Oscars of Bollywood, at a time of growth for Indian film in North America.

Insiders attribute the increase to the thriving Indian economy, bigger budgets, an increasing South Asian diaspora, and growing popularity among Afghans, Arabs, Russians and Caribbean immigrants.

Increased crossover with Indian stars such as Priyanka Chopra taking on Hollywood is giving India more global exposure.

But if IIFA’s hopes to reach out to new audiences by holding its awards ceremony each year overseas, it still has some way to penetrate non-South Asian audiences in the United States.

“The world needs Bollywood movies,” actor Anil Kapoor of “Slumdog Millionaire” fame told AFP on the green carpet Saturday, praising their “happiness, smiles, laughter, dance, celebration.”

As for the awards themselves “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” (“This Heart is Complicated”) leads the way with eight nominations followed by “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story”, a biopic of former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, which is nominated for seven awards.

Dubbed Bollywood’s Oscars by some, although critics say the awards themselves do not enjoy the same stature.

Project Ghazi release delayed after premiere night

ISLAMABAD (Online): If you made plans to watch Pakistan’s first ever superhero film, Project Ghazi, over the weekend then we have some bad news for you.

The film, which was scheduled to release across cinemas on July 14, has pushed forward its release to an unannounced date. Following its premiere at Nueplex Cinema, Karachi on Thursday night, Project Ghazi team updated their Facebook page and informed their fans of the delay.

The post read, “It is with a heavy heart that we are making the announcement that Project Ghazi’s release date has been postponed. We understand that this was a highly anticipated movie, but films of this magnitude require extensive technical work and hence to do justice to this film genre, we have decided to delay the release from July 14, 2017.

The new release date will be announced soon.” Reports suggest that the decision to postpone movie’s release was taken after the movie received a negative response on its premiere. The movie screening suffered from technical, sound and dubbing issues along with mismanagement.

It was even mentioned that audiences and movie stars left the cinema after forty minutes into the film. The producers hope to re-edit the movie and then release it officially. The movie, which stars Sheheryar Munawar, Syra Shahroz and Humayun Saeed, had created a buzz being a first of its kind movie in Pakistan.

Shahroz plays the role of scientist in the movie, while Saeed and Munawar both play super soldiers. The makers of the film stated that the science fiction movie highlights the intolerance prevalent in the society which is eventually dealt with by highly skilled soldiers as a result of their bravery and the spirit of nationalism.

My comments always create controversy, says Salman Khan

NEW DELHI (Online): Unfortunately, Salman Khan has earned a reputation for making statements which become national news for all the wrong reasons. More often than not, he finds himself at the centre of controversy.

However, we find it hard to blame him considering he is always subjected to media glare. When asked by an Indian newspaper whether he finds the constant attention and misinterpretation of his statements irksome, the Dabbang star said,
“Everyone shares their opinion but when somebody like me says something, it’s twisted around.

Then, a [TV] show runs [the comment], and it gets good TRPs. But if it’s their business, let them do it. The other option for me is to just stop talking. I hate doing interviews, and I get bored of them but I do them because if a fan of mine picks up a newspaper or a magazine; or watches a TV channel, he should know that a certain film of mine is up for release.

That’s all.” The 51-year-old star also stated that before the release of his film Jaan-E-Mann alongside Preity Zinta and Akshay Kumar in 2006, he never even stepped out the house for interviews and promotion for his films.

“When did I do any publicity for any film? The films would still run and became big hits. But now that a precedent [of doing interviews] has set in, so it’s going on. Now, if I go on a TV show (for promotions), it feels good if their TRPs get boosted. Also, through that show, my fans will get to see me at home for free.

That’s the only intent of doing all of that. But then, a lot of times, journalists want a reaction about something because either their bosses have asked them for that or they want to make a name for themselves.

But that’s wrong journalism, which I don’t appreciate at all”, the actor added. Khan will be seen next in Tiger Zinda Hai, alongside Katrina Kaif, which is slated to release on December 22.

Michael Jackson estate plans TV animated Halloween special

NEW YORK (AFP): An animated television special featuring Michael Jackson will premiere this year for Halloween in the latest posthumous project by the estate of the late King of Pop.

The estate said “Michael Jackson’s Halloween” will air on CBS in the United States around the October 31 holiday dedicated to the ghoulish and supernatural.

The estate said in an announcement Tuesday that it was also in talks to broadcast “Michael Jackson’s Halloween” abroad.

Since Jackson’s sudden death in 2009, his estate has pursued a range of projects to monetize the legacy of one of pop history’s top-selling artists.

Success has been mixed, with the estate putting up for sale his Neverland ranch in California after early talk of preserving it.

Two new albums of unreleased material have come out since Jackson’s death but one of them, 2010’s “Michael,” was marred by controversy over whether Jackson would have wanted the unfinished music released or if he was even singing on all the tracks.

Jackson was an early enthusiast of adapting his music to videos and short films with his “Thriller,” a 14-minute extravaganza of Halloween-like characters, becoming a landmark in music history when it was released in 1983.
