China praise Russia for its efforts to extend New START

MOSCOW: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday praised Russia for its efforts to extend Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START).

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry press statement, Chinese Foreign Minister expressed his views during a phone call with Russian top diplomat Sergey Lavrov.

Furthermore, the press statement has mentioned that, “The parties agreed to work together to address common threats and challenges, boost foreign policy coordination and cooperation on multilateral platforms.”

“China welcomed Russia’s effective efforts to extend the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

According to the ministry, Lavrov and Wang Yi also discussed the need for a meeting of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Regarding the bi-lateral relations, the statement mentioned that, “The parties lauded the current state of Russia-China relations, which continue to progress amid global challenges.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry commented that, “The ministers confirmed that the 20th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation will be the focus of bilateral relations in 2021.”

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the extension has made it possible to maintain a key mechanism to preserve strategic stability.

While looking into the backdrop, it should be noted that on January 26, Moscow and Washington exchanged notes on extending New START for five years.
