Civil activists shut down three mobile phone towers

LASHKARGAH: The civil activists, union of disabled people and some traders closed down three mobile phone towers for what they said the inability of the mobile phone companies to provide proper services to consumers in Helmand on Thursday

According to information, the mobile phone towers of Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC), Etisalat and Roshan were closed down in Helmand.

They took out the security guards, shut down the power generators and locked down the facilities.

According to these people, the mobile phone companies had stopped providing services throughout Helmand over the past some time, multiplying issues of local residents.

They were of the view that the offices of the mobile phone companies had been contacted few days ago. They officials were asked to ensure provision of proper services in Helmand.

The mobile phone towers were closed after the officials of the companies did not take any steps.

They threatened to put fire to the towers if the services were not provided in Helmand in the next three days. They warned the guards not to open the services without their permission.

Officials in Helmand and mobile phone companies did not say anything in this regard so far.

The Taliban warned mobile phone companies to shut down their services in Helmand about three weeks ago. After the threats, the mobile phone companies closed their offices in Helmand.

According to Taliban, the mobile phone companies had been closed down temporarily. However, they have not disclosed the reasons of the matter.

Currently, only Salam network is active in Helmand.
