CM for prompt steps to control dengue outbreak
PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan has directed to focus on high risk areas particularly tribal districts in order to prevent and control dengue virus. He also directed to expedite the recruitment of medical Entomologists and provision of other facilities to the new districts. He urged for effective coordination and effective mechanism with newly merged districts for healthcare facilities and said that health officers of previous and new districts will jointly supervise the health activities and Secretary Health would have the overall supervisory role. He said that erstwhile FATA has become part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. We have to resolve the issues of these areas on fast track basis at any cost.
He was presiding over a meeting regarding dengue prevention and control measures at Chief Minister Secretariat Peshawar. Provincial Minister for Health Hisham Inamullah IKhan, Chief Secretary Naveed Kamran Baloch, District Nazim Peshawar Arbab Asim, Secretary Health Abid Majeed, Commissioner Peshawar Shahab Ali Shah and other attended. The meeting was briefed in length about the dengue virus, types and nature of its diseases, drivers and reasons of increase in dengue, the reasons behind rapidly spreading of dengue larva, the efforts for controlling dengue outbreak in 2017 and the strategy for dengue in 2018. The meeting was told that after the dengue outbreak in 2017, the preventive measures were taken on war footing basis. Provincial and district dengue control units and rapid response teams in all districts were established. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Health (surveillance and response) Act 2017 was promulgated. Health emergency for dengue outbreak was declared in district Peshawar. Public health committee was also notified for inter sectoral collaboration for dengue response.
The meeting was further told that a comprehensive plan with weekly time lines has been developed for 2018. All 19 line departments have been involved in dengue prevention and control activities, 41 positions of medical Entomologists have been created and given to Public Service Commission for recruitment. 14 districts and 257 union councils throughout the province have been identified as high risk regarding dengue virus. Regular surveillance for dengue vector is underway in all high risk and medium risk union councils in a phased manner to ensure targeted action.
Mehmood Khan appreciated the efforts made by the health department and underlined the need of long term planning and integrated coordination among district government and all line departments in order to completely prevent the dengue virus. He ordered for special focus on tribal districts in this regard and urged for systematic mechanism for coordination with tribal districts. He made it clear that erstwhile FATA is the part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. We have to own it in spirit and letter. The provincial government will provide resources for efficient social services in newly merged seven districts. He directed the Chief Secretary to resolve the issues of tribal districts regarding preventive measures against dengue. He also urged for fast track recruitment on newly created positions of Entomologists and surveillance officers so that they could be deputed in high risk districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Furthermore Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan has said that Kabal Hospital Swat should be upgraded to category C. He directed Secretary C&W and Secretary Health to demolish the old building and start a five storey high rising building for the said hospital. He also directed to expedite the work of upgradation of Matta Hospital Swat. He regretted the delay of purchase of equipments for the newly constructed Saidu Hospital and its functionalization. He directed to purchase the equipments as soon as possible as the construction work has been almost completed. He ordered to complete the electrification work and drainage system in efficient way. He stressed to complete Swat Expressway, Gabeen Jabba Road, Kohistan Banda Road, Rest House, Malam Jaba Road, Kanjoo Flyover and Chakdara Intersection on time.
He made these directives while chairing a meeting of Health department, C&W department at Chief Minister Secretariat Peshawar. Minister Health Hisham Inamullah, Minister C&W Akbar Ayub, Secretary Health Abid Majeed, Secretary P&D Zahir Shah and other relevant officers attended the meeting.
Chief Minister directed finance department to arrange fund and increase allocation to those projects who are short of fund so that the projects may not be delayed due to lack of availability of fund. Secretary Health and Secretary C&W briefed him in detailed about various developmental projects in Malakand Division and their present status.
