COAS to brief senate committee about national security on Tuesday

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed will brief the Senate Committee of the Whole House on Tuesday (December 19), according to a notification issued by Senate Secretariat on Sunday.

The army chief and DG Military Operations would brief committee members on the emerging national security paradigm for Pakistan with respect to recent visits and developments. The in-camera meeting will begin at 10am on Tuesday.

The committee was constituted to ‘prepare policy guidelines in the light of emerging regional realities and the role of the United States’, the notification read.

The bilateral ties between Pakistan and US suffered in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s revised policy towards the Afghan war, announced in August this year.

US president Donald Trump accused Pakistan of habouring terrorists on Pakistani soil and prolonging Afghan insurgency, while unveiling his new policy.

In reaction to US new policy for the region, Pakistan asserted that it did not desire ending ties with the United States, instead wanted relations based on mutual respect.

“Pakistan is the only country which has won the fight against terrorism. We have purged the country of terrorists. The sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in war on terror were exemplary and unmatched,” this was stated by Foreign Minister Asif Khawaja back on Sept 7 while addressing a press conference.
