Congo fever outbreak: twenty deaths in past two weeks

KABUL (TOLOnews): The Ministry of Public Health reported that twenty people have died due to Congo fever in the past two weeks.

Sharafat Zaman Amarkhail, the spokesperson for the ministry, told TOLOnews that 265 people in the country have contracted the disease this month.

Amarkhail stated, “In June, we recorded 265 positive cases across the country, indicating that the number of cases in June has quadrupled compared to the previous month.”

Medad Khan Danishwar, a physician, said, “When we care for a patient, all health protocols must be followed. Similarly, when we slaughter animals, health protocols must be observed because most of our patients are either butchers or have a family member with Congo fever.”

Amir Khan, currently hospitalized in the infectious diseases ward for Congo fever, said he fell ill during Eid. He recounted his illness and treatment as follows:
“Initially, I had diarrhea and bleeding. Later, the diarrhea stopped, and the bleeding ceased.”

Some other patients and their caregivers spoke about their conditions before being admitted to the hospital.

Omar Khan, a patient, said, “I was in Bamyan hospital for three days. The medication didn’t help, so we came here after a week, and now I’m feeling better.”

Faiz Rahman, a caregiver, said, “My nephew fell ill. My brother lives in Qarabagh district. They did tests and treatments, but it had no effect.”

Meanwhile, doctors at the infectious diseases hospital also reported an increase in the number of Congo fever patients in recent weeks, stating that forty people are currently hospitalized due to this disease.

Ehsanullah Hakimi, a physician, said, “A few days ago, our statistics significantly increased in our hospital because we had allocated more resources to Congo fever patients.”

According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Health, 84 people contracted Congo fever in May, and ten people died from the disease.
