Contracts for 2nd phase of Kajaki dam, canal plan signed

KABUL: Contracts have been signed for the second phase of work on the Kajaki dam and Zameen Dawar canal in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province, the Presidential Palace announced on Tuesday.

President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Dr. Abdullah, several ministers, public representatives and other officials attended the signing ceremony at the Palace.

Contracts for the second phase of Kajaki dam, a project that would add 100MW of power and electricity purchase, were signed between Deputy Minister of Energy and Water M. Gul Khulmi and 77 Construction Company head Sulaiman Salif.

The minister also signed a contract with De Afghanistan Breshna Shirka (DABS) Director Eng. Amanullah Ghalib for the purchase electricity, according to a statement from Ghani’s office.

The 77 Construction Company would invest $175 million in the project that would be implemented under the public-private partnership to contemporary standards and put into service.

The government hopes to gain $93 million in revenue from the project, which will provide job opportunities, enhance electricity supply to consumers and attract more private sector investment.

Similarly, the statement said, contracts for the Zameen Dawar canal and the Musa Qala dam construction were also signed between Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Naseer Ahmad Durrani and the director of the 77 Company.

The scheme would help resolve many problems of residents such as floods, electricity, irrigation and potable water in addition to generating job opportunities for people.
