LAHORE: An anti-corruption court has granted interim bail to former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi till April 27 in a corruption case.
Anti-Corruption Court Judge Khalid Mehmood Bhatti on Friday heard the petition filed by the former chief minister seeking interim bail in a NAB case. Advocate Amjad Pervaiz submitted petition on his behalf.
While granting Elahi interim bail till April 27, the judge restrained the police from arresting him.
During hearing, the judge in a light mood asked the former chief minister that the court secretary was a very hard working boy, ‘if you (Elahi) want to promote someone, promote him to BS 22 like your principal secretary Muhammad Khan Bjhatti’.
On judge’s remarks, the entire courtroom burst into laughter.
Elahi has been accused of taking bribe in the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) agreement with a Turkish firm. He is accused of accepting bribe money to the tune of Rs125 million against Rs2.90 billion payment.
The anti-corruption watchdog has opened an inquiry into the case.
Last night, the Gujarat Police conducted another raid at the residence of former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.
Police cordoned off Elahi’s residence, a spokesperson said
Just staffers were there during the raid, the spokesperson said, adding that no family member was present.
The raid is stated to be conducted in connection with a corruption case.
