Cruise missile fired on Taliban base

KABUL/LASHKARGAH: The coalition forces fired cruise missile on a base of Taliban where they prepared improvised explosive devices and trained fighters for suicide attacks in Helmand province last night, officials said on Thursday.

According to a press release issued by Helmand provincial media office, the coalition forces conducted airstrike against a Taliban base in Sarwan Kala area in the limits of Sangin district.

Eighteen Taliban gunmen were killed and nine more sustained injuries in the blitz, the press release said. The fallen gunmen included experts of IEDs and trainers of suicide bombers, the press release stated. The cruise missile hit the facility where IEDs were prepared and gunmen were trained for suicide attacks, the press release said.

Meanwhile, the defence ministry and NDS confirmed the airstrike and provided similar information about casualties in the blitz.

The cruise missile was fired from Shorab military base in Helmand, the defence ministry said. The NDS had pointed out the base through intelligence information.
