DABS refers 373 defaulters to attorneys

Monitoring Desk

ZARANJ: Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) office in southwestern Nimroz province has introduced more than 370 consumers to the attorney’s office over refusing to pay electricity bills.

Eng Abdul Bari Latifi, DABS director in Nimroz, told Pajhwok Afghan News that government departments owed 90 million afghanis to the power utility in unpaid electricity bills and common people 259 million.

He said the provincial DABS office was committed to collecting unpaid bills and so far power connections of 7,643 consumers had been cut off. Another 373 consumers who rejected to pay arrears were introduced to the attorney’s office, said Latifi, who added most of the defaulters happened to be powerful individuals, but named no one.

Currently DABS has 28,000 customers in Nimroz. The price of one kilowatt electricity for common people is 5.64 afghanis while businesses are charged 12 afghanis per one kilowatt.

Abdul Baqi, a consumer, said the electricity tariff was very high in Nimroz and his electricity line had been disconnected by DABS. “I am a daily wager and earn 200 afghanis per day, sometimes there is no work.”
