DG NAB KP seeks masses support against corruption

Peshawar: A seminar on “Good Governance Through Prevention of Corruption” was organized at NAB, KP Peshawar on Thursday Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Engr. Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, senior Pakistani diplomat Rustam Shah Mohmand and DG NAB Brig (r) Farooq Naser Awan. On this occasion the Governor KP and Director General NAB, KP distributed credentials amongst NAB officers on their best performance. shield/certificates, cash rewards and shields were also distributed among the students who had achieved positions in speech and paintings competitions in connection with International Anti-Corruption Day Week.

While addressing the participant, DG NAB, KP said that NAB cannot achieve much without support from all segments of society, adding that NAB highly appreciate the warm response and support extended by society in making NAB efforts a success.

He said that NAB is an apex Anti-Corruption organization of Pakistan charged with responsibility to eliminate corruption and corrupt practices from the society through a holistic approach.

“Corruption is a menace that has a wide range of corrosive effects on societies. It undermines development and rule of law, leads to violations of human rights, erodes quality of life, distorts markets and ultimately affects the economy” DG NAB remarked.

Farooq Naser Awan said that NAB being the apex Anti-Corruption agency, is working hard to eliminate the menace of corruption, since its inception in year 1999. However, in year 2004 NAB came up with National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) adopting a three pronged strategic approach of Awareness, Prevention and Enforcement against corruption and corrupt practices. He further said that Awareness, Prevention and Enforcement efforts of NAB have created a potent deterrence against corruption and have contributed to the overall positive effect. The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) issued in 2016 by Transparency International Berlin has placed Pakistan at 116th position out 175 countries. He said that it is encouraging to state that Pakistan has improved its ranking by nine steps from year 2014.

“PILDAT has already acknowledged the efforts of NAB through its report wherein it has rated public confidence in NAB as 42 percent, DG NAB asserted.

DG NAB, KP added that presently NAB, KP is investigating various cases of prime importance. Since its inception in year 2000, NAB, KP has received 41000 complaints of which 1585 inquiries and 700 investigations have been authorized, 500 references have been filed where conviction rate is very high. He further mentioned that amount of Rs. 6.5 billion looted by corrupt elements have been recovered by NAB, KP.
