KARACHI (Monitoring Desk): Differently-abled people from various parts of Sindh protested on Monday near the Arts Council area of the metropolis, demanding implementation of an increased job quota for them.
According to the protesters, the Sindh government announced an increase in the job quota from 2pc to 5pc, but it has not been implemented yet.
Therefore, the protesters said, they wanted to go inside the Sindh Assembly, which is situated close to the area of the protest.
In order to bar the protesters from heading towards the assembly building, police put up barricades in the areas. As the protesters tried to push their way forward, two were injured while a woman fell unconscious.
To express solidarity with the protesters, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MPA Khurram Sher Zaman and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s Deewan Chand Chawla reached the protest site.
The increase in job quota — from 2pc to 5pc — for people with disabilities was announced in December 2016 by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
The chief minister made the announcement while speaking to a delegation of a welfare organisation for disabled people.
The meeting had taken place after people with disabilities gathered outside the CM House to mark the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
