Monitoring Desk

KABUL: Chief Executive Officer of National Unity Government Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has said the district of electronic identity cards would only be started after approval by all the all the ethnicities in the country.

This he said while presiding over the ministers’ council meeting here on Monday.

The chief executive said distribution of electronic identity cards was national process and should create unity among Afghans instead of increasing differences.

He said not only all the legal issues must be kept in distribution of electronic cards but the peoples’ opinion should also be respected, adding the process was delayed due to hearing peoples’ opinion. Though Afghan officials announced few days ago that the distribution of electronic cards would soon be started, the process has not yet been commenced.

Some members of parliament are opposed to the process over the issue of inclusion of nationality and religion columns in the electronic identity cards.

The chief executive claimed that Daesh or Islamic State (IS) was dismantled in eastern and northern Afghan provinces by the Afghan security forces.

Abdullah said his silence over the recent political developments in the country meant that national interest was important to him instead personal interest.
