Distribution of Nutrition commodities inaugurated
PESHAWAR: Minister for Health Dr. Hisham Inam Ullah khan has inaugurated Enhanced Nutrition for Mother and Children Project and distribution of Nutritional Commodities here in a local hotel on Wednesday.
The Minister said that from the day first the Prime Minister Imran Khan has talked about the malnourished children, adding that we thankful and forward the vision of PM to work for the malnourished children and mothers in KP.
He informed that according to the National Nutrition Survey 2018, four out of ten children less than five years of age in the province are stunted, and the percentage of stunting is the highest in Newly Merged District (48.3%) in the whole country.
Similarly, wasting is also a problem and its prevalence is on the rise since 1997. Responding to this situation, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has imposed Nutrition Emergency in the province to embark upon initiatives for addressing the issues of mal-nutrition, the minister added.
He informed that around 45 billion rupees fund has been initiated for the project while around 250 Outpatient Therapeutic Program Sites or OTP sites in short. These OTP sites provide the first level of care to the severally malnourished children. Similarly, Nutrition Stabilization Centers in every district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been established. Dr. Hisham further added that the health department thanked the UNICEF and WHO and other donor agencies for providing support to this mile stone project, adding that until a healthy society cannot be established when even there were not healthy children.
He informed that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health department and KP government is keen to take steps and there will be no compromised on health reforms in the province. He added and emphasized on the importance of media, adding that media should play a key role to create awareness among masses about this project and to save more children and mother for malnutrition.
On the occasion Director General Health Services KP Arshad Khan said that this project will not only save thousands of children and mother but it will also reduce the ratio of Maternal Mortality (MMR) and Neonatal Mortality Ratio (NMR) in KP.
He also informed that in the first phase the lady health workers will also chalk out a survey to highlight the malnourished children and mother in KP as it will help to access to those areas where malnourished children and mothers can be helped out .
He further added that there are supplemental food in shape called F-75 and F-100 milk and multi-micronutrient sachet which are essential food for lactating and pregnant women for maintaining and improving their nutritional status.
On the occasion other members of the health department and officials of donor agencies were also present and spoke.
