Don’t speak against national interest, Karzai told

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: Some members of the Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of the parliament, on Wednesday hit out at former president Hamid Karza’s remarks on resolving the ongoing crisis.

Karzai, speaking to NTV, said on Sunday only Russia could help Afghanistan defeat terrorism. “I understand perfectly well that if Russia builds new relations with Pakistan and Afghanistan, you can help us.

“Not the Britons as we kicked them out of the country several times, not the Americans as they’ve been killing us for 17 years, but Russia only, “the ex-president said.

On Wednesday, lawmaker Mohammad Naeem Hameedzai Lalai said: “Karzai should not speak against the national interest to please the Russians.”

He added such comments created problems in the country and Karzai being a national leader should avoid passing remarks that might fuel tensions.

Deputy Speaker Humayon called Karzai’s comments his personal views and said: “Being a national leader who served the people of Afghanistan for more than a decade, we want Karzai to avoid such comments as may cause problems for Afghanistan.”

He added such controversial comments resulted in political tensions and the political elites of the country should refrain from making statements that cause problems for the people.
