Echo of power outages in KP Assembly
ANP lawmaker Sardar Hussain Babak, while speaking on a point of order in provincial Assembly session, vehemently criticised the federal government and provincial government for frequent power outages across Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. He complained that the province produces thousands of megawatt cheap hydel power but in return its people are victimized by electricity supply suspension caused by rag-tag transmission and distribution system.
In prima facie the critique seems justified. However, the same problem was of greater magnitude when ANP was ruling the province from 2008 to 2013 and the party was coalition partner in the federal government. At that time small hydel power projects were not undertaken for execution in addition to hiring a consultancy to work out feasibility for setting up a provincial Transmission and Distribution Company. At least one must give credit to previous PTI provincial government for launching micro and small hydel power projects and to the incumbent one for according Cabinet approval for establishing the Provincial Power Transmission and Distribution Company. Upgradation of rag-tag National Transmission and Distribution System is the responsibility of federal government. Previous PML-N government had left this liability as legacy to the present federal government as it did not fulfill the procedural requirements to get disbursed $4.5 billion ADB assistance for power transmission and distribution system improvement.. The loan was sanctioned in 2016.
