ECP disqualifies Karachi Deputy Mayor Arshad Vohra

F.P. Report

KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday disqualified Deputy Mayor Karachi Arshad Vohra for switching parties after being elected to the post.

The decision came as a bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan heard Muttahida Qaumi Movement- Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui’s petition seeking Vohra’s disqualification. The ECP had earlier reserved its verdict on the petition.

Vohra had become Karachi deputy mayor on the ticket of MQM-P, however, he later joined the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP).

Speaking to the media after the hearing, MQM-P Senator Mian Attique said, “The decision to disqualify Vohra, who was nominated chairman from UC-49, is another victory for the party. Floor crossing will no longer be as easy as it was.”

Mian Attique further said, “The new deputy mayor will be from Karachi and MQM-P.”

Vohra, an industrialist and a former chairman of SITE Association, was elected MPA from the PS-115 constituency before he won the local government election.
