ISLAMABAD: A petition filed with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has challenged on Monday Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) registration with the commission under name of disqualified premier Nawaz Sharif.
A plea lodged by Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) demanded the election commission to de-notify PML-N as a party registered under a member of a political front who was disqualified by Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) over corruption.
The petition stated that a disqualified politician could neither lead nor be a member.
The plea was filed today after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as president of PML-N as a three member-bench of the apex court ruled that a disqualified premier could not retain office of a political party.
The bench was headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar.
The bench cited Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification as the premier of Pakistan last year on July 28 in corruption probe to rule that he was not qualified to assume position of a party head under the Constitution of Pakistan.
Nawaz Sharif was disqualified almost a year before he was to complete five-year tenure after PML-N was elected to federal power in General Elections 2013.
