EU chief von der Leyen to visit Kyiv on Tuesday

BRUSSELS (AA) : European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Tuesday to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Eric Mamer, spokesperson for the European Commission, said von der Leyen will reiterate the EU’s support for Ukraine.

He said the visit will take place on Europe Day, May 9, and that they welcome Ukraine’s decision to celebrate this day from this year onwards.

Mamer also said details of the visit will not be shared due to security reasons but that Ukraine’s desire to join the EU is on the agenda.

Since Russia launched its war on Ukraine some 14 months ago, Kyiv has made a renewed push to join both the EU and NATO, though Moscow is opposed to both.
