Expanding Iran related sanctions

The US is now targeting the countries which are not willing to sever trade relations with Iran. Six Chines Shiping Companies and two Chinese nationals Eric Chen, Chief Executive Officers of Reach Holding (Shanghai) Company Ltd and Daniel Y He, an official of the same have been sanctioned. It is alleged that these companies have collaborated with Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line and its Shanghai based subsidiary Hafez Darya Arya Shipping Company in the transportation of proliferation sensitive items intended for Iran’s missile and military programmes. For this purpose a provision of UNSC Resolution 1929 has been invoked to apply the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act Section 1244 (IFCA 1244).

The action seems to be a sort of backlash invited by China’s support for Iran, which led to the rejection of US resolution in UNSC in mid-August to extend the embargo on arms sale to Iran. After the defeat in UNSC vote, US secretary of State Mike Pompeo had angrily reacted and said that US “is prepared to use its domestic authorities to impose consequences on UN member countries that fail to adhere to its sanctions.” The action against Chinese entities and national will serve no useful purpose except a futile exercise like its trade war with China few months ago.
