‘Fata reform package to be implemented within 6 months’

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan Tuesday said the a comprehensive reform package for bringing erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) at par with settled districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be implemented within the period of next six months.

Replying to a calling attention notice moved by Senator Siraj-ul-Haq and Mushtaq Ahmed, the minister said the Supreme Court has given six months period for establishing complete administrative infrastructure in the tribal districts of erstwhile FATA. And government was vigorously working to complete the task within specified time frame.

He said this was a huge task as buildings were needed to establish offices of civil judges, magistrates, etc. Prime Minister Imran Khan has recently announced another package of Rs1.63 billion for erstwhile Fata areas. Another package of Rs100 billion would also be given to tribal districts.

Earlier, Senator Mushtaq Ahmed said Fata Interim Governance Regulation had been nullified by Peshawar High Court and given one month time to introduce Fata reforms. Two months have passed and no alternate system has been announced by the government.

He demanded fulfillment of promises including giving employment to 40,000 unemployed persons, 10 years exemption from taxes and bridging legal vacuum in erstwhile Fata.
