LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) on Thursday arrested renowned columnist and televangelist Orya Maqbool Jan on charges of alleged hate speech and making disrespectful remarks against state institutions, according to ARY News.
The arrest followed a raid at Orya’s residence in DHA Phase 6, Lahore. An FIA spokesperson confirmed that Jan will be presented before the court to seek his physical remand in connection with the alleged offense.
Orya Maqbool Jan is accused under Section 11 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), which addresses the offense of hate speech. This section specifically targets individuals who prepare or disseminate information through any digital platform that promotes or is likely to promote interfaith, sectarian, or racial hatred.
Section 11 of PECA is designed to combat content that fosters animosity, hostility, or antagonism among different religious, sectarian, or racial groups. The penalties for violating this section include imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both.
These stringent measures are in place to deter activities that could lead to social discord, conflicts, and heightened tensions within the society.
