Four Islamic State militants arrested

SHIBERGHAN: Four members of the Islamic State (IS) outfit, also known as Daesh, were detained in the capital of northwestern Jawzjan province on Monday morning, an official said.

Abdul Samad, deputy garrison commander, told Afghan media News they had been tipped off about the militants intending to travel to eastern Nangarhar province from Darzab district.

Samad said the four rebels were captured at a checkpoint in Shiberghan by the garrison personnel. Cases against the detainees have been referred to the intelligence service.

He added the insurgents wanted to travel to Nangarhar to provide equipment and financial assistance to the group. The rebels are said to be loyal to Qari Hikmat, a Daesh leader in Jawzjan.

Abdul Basir, a resident of Shiberghan, told Pajhwok criminal incidents had increased recently in the province. But he was pleased with garrison forces’ role in strengthening security in the province.
