Gazans Reject Trump’s Plan, Vow to Rebuild Their Own Hotels and Restaurants

GAZA CITY, February 8, 2025 – Palestinians in Gaza have firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to transform the war-ravaged territory into a luxurious “Riviera of the Middle East,” vowing instead to rebuild their own restaurants and hotels.

“There is nothing that cannot be repaired,” said Assad Abu Haseira, a restaurant owner in Gaza, pledging to serve food even before his establishment is fully rebuilt. “Trump says he wants to change Gaza, but we remain Arab, and our history cannot be replaced.”

The proposal, reminiscent of a 2019 plan by Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, envisions a Gaza Strip emptied of its Palestinian population and redeveloped as an international resort. The idea has sparked global outrage, with critics calling it a form of ethnic cleansing and a violation of international law.

Mohammed Abu Haseira, another restaurant owner, questioned Trump’s logic. “Why destroy our restaurants just to build others?” he asked.

Before Israel’s 15-month offensive, Gaza’s Mediterranean coastline had a vibrant tourism scene despite a long-standing blockade. Now, Gazans are determined to rebuild their city on their own terms, refusing to abandon their land.

For Palestinians, Trump’s proposal echoes the 1948 Nakba, when 700,000 were displaced during the creation of Israel. “We will never leave the ruins of our homes,” Gazans insist.
