MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Khaama Press): Gen. Abdul Raqib assumed charge as new police chief of northern Balkh province amid rising political tensions which resulted into breakout of sporadic clashes in Mazar-e-Sharif city, the capital of Balkh province this afternoon.
Gen. Khoshal Sadat, Senior Deputy Interior Minister for Security, confirmed that Gen. Mubarez was formally introduced as new police chief of Balkh this afternoon.
Gen. Sadat thanked the Special Forces, National Police, and National Army for facilitating the implementation of Presidential decree the introduction of new police chief of Balkh province.
This comes as Mazar-e-Sharif city witnessed sporadic clashes and violence this afternoon due to the circumstances surrounding appointment and introduction of new police chief of Balkh.
The Ministry of Interior officials confirmed that one police soldier sustained injuries during the clashes today and 25 gunmen were arrested.
In the meantime, reports indicate that one police soldier has died and seven others including policemen and civilians have sustained injuries.
