Ghani responds to Taliban’s gesture of goodwill, vows to release 2000 prisoners
KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani responded to the gesture of goodwill by Taliban group and vowed to release 2,000 Taliban prisoners.
The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement said President Ghani convened a meeting in ARG Palace late on Sunday to discuss the release of Taliban prisoners in return to Taliban’s gesture of goodwill for announcing ceasefire during Eid Days.
Ghani had earlier ordered the Afghan forces to return to defense posture while welcoming the announcement of ceasefire by Taliban during Eid Days.
In his speech on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr, Ghani vowed that the government would expedite the release of Taliban prisoners.
Ghani also called on Taliban militants to reciprocate and release the prisoners of the Afghan government.
This comes as the Taliban group released a statement late on Saturday night, instructing its fighters to refrain from offensive activities.
